The Smiths should be on this list. They have influenced more bands than you could even begin to name. The two major artists that come to mind right now that were influenced by The Smiths are Radiohead and Coldplay. Maybe you’ve heard of them…
This list is really quite…stupid…
You really have little idea about the broad spectrum of music.
how about the Ramones? being the first punk band to be recorded?
or MIles Davis, who created 2 new genres of music?
or who should be no.1
Ernest Hogan
you are asking “who is he”
well I as you probably don’t know much of anything about what a real influence is, you should just google him instead trying to make lists based of the top 10 lists…
how can pinkfloyd not be here?
Or the Beach Boys, who pushed the Beatles to new heights?
your taste in music is bland, think outside of pop
not joining in as a hater, just offering some suggestions:
title your post accurately. you said musicians, then you started naming bands. the beatles are not a musician. they are made up of three musicians. ringo doesn’t count.
define a genre. popular music probably would have worked for you. yes, all the musicians and bands you chose would constitute as popular music because of their mainstream audience.
while a good amount of people would agree that bono is a douche, he should have made the list. especially in a list that is so heavy with popular music.
something i do appreciate: your diversity within the selections you made. seeing a woman on the list made me happy, as well as your demonstration of ethnic diversity.
Eminem? Tupac? christ ABBA are more influential than them!!
record sales does not equal influence
if it did, every band would sound like mariah carey
the list sucks
jay z ranked better than hendrix? get real
Rob, they are not ranked in a specific order
I hate to say it, dude, but this list is a joke. BOB DYLAN??? Do you not realize that the fallout from his early 60’s music played a role in helping to end the VietNam war? Were it not for Dylan the Beatles would never had written most of their best work. The sheer number of significant artists who were directly influenced by him is astronomical. How can you expect to be taken seriously to list Emenim but not Dylan?
steve..you may have been joking about Ringo not counting…if not, I disagree wholeheartedly. He was the glue that held the group together. And one HELL of a solid drummer (listen to “Rain” for proof).
Ask any metal fan who the most influential band in metal was, and they’ll probably tell you Black Sabbath.
Pathetic!
Most influential of “all time”? Is there a name in that list from pre-1950?
J.S. Bach was the single most influential musician in history: without equal temperament nothing you mention would exist.
And you left out the Velvet Underground?
Although some may say Judas Priest instead, as far as bands go Iron Maiden have influenced an extraordinary amount of musicians, no doubt most and perhaps all of the metal bands that came after them. Which is a lot of people.
although i agree that the spectrum of this list should be broader, its logical that pop music bears the greatest role. its POP music for crying out loud. and naming a small name behind the biggest band is no use, this list’s about the most influential musicians of all time, not the people who helped them. and i think metallica should be on this. as should the ramones, the clash and bad religion.
how can you only name 15!?
Where are the Pixies? Bob Dylan? James Brown?
sounds like an okay list. but don’t forget about the earliest musicians of all time. just to name a few…mozart, beethoven, bach?? without these people music would be NOTHING! i think you forgot about abba..but overall pretty good job. i don’t think jay-z or eminem should have been on though. i wouldn’t consider them influential. especially not over the greatest musicans of all time (bach, mozart..)
this list is lame. Here is my own
1.Jimi Hendrix
2. Rollingstones
3 Led Zeppelin
4 Black Sabbath
5 ACDC
6 Guns and Roses
7 Metallica
8 Misfits
9 Elvis
10 Queen
11 Motley Crue
12 Boston
nirvana should not be on this list. They would have been a fad just like everybody else on MTV if Kurt hadn’t killed himself. He ripped off killing joke, the pixies and the Smashing Pumpkins (in stealing studio techniques Vig and Corgan created together) Theres influence and then theres being a copy. Basically if fallout boy died someone would put them up on a list because they were “influential”, yet all they do is copy all the copies of copies and somehow all the first wavers get forgotten. Yes its sad when artists die, yes Kurt was talented, yes Nirvana was a decent grunge band. but they were nothing more than pop. It should be the Pixies…not Nirvana.
and dont get me started on Eminem
Velvet Underground, Pixies
uh…Robert Johnson? kind of invented the 12-bar blues, and the blues in general.
Hendrix should totally be higher. Without Hendrix bands would still be just standing there on stage. I agree with NATHAN KIRBY. but I, Nirvana hardly sounds like Killing Joke, and ya I don’t see why Eminem’s on there.
Thank you for not including Britney Spears. No, seriously, thanks.
the music list above i dont think is to good because they probably havent heard of Meat loaf
Eminem sold over 40 million worldwide, not 80 million. Tupac sold almost 80 million and he was given the title of highest selling rapper of ALL TIME in the Guinness book of world records.
Why the hell is Jay Z before tupac? You must be on crack.
AM HAPPY TO SEE THE MUSICIANS-I FEEL TUPAC IS THE GREATEST RAPPER DEAD-I AM ADDICTED TO HIM AM AT TIMES DREAMING WITH HIM-DAMN-
This list is retarded. What about Louis Armstrong, who influenced over a century of America’s music.
I dunno guys, I heard Mozart play the piano really well. Bach did too.
Nathan kirby…
i was making a list of my own, then realised it was exactly the same as yours to the exact numbering…it was weird, but awesome the only change is elvis is at the top, cause he was the first person to ever say “Fuck you” to the little bitchy folks who didn’t like his sexy hips, and for that he is the greatest, but your list s good. thats just my opinion.
Wow, this was bad.
Where’s Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, James Brown, Kraftwerk, Sam Cooke etc?
And if you are including some influential rappers try Rakim, basically the father of all modern rappers’ whole style.
Always going to be divisive, listing stuff like this, but there’s never any reason to be rude as some have been! Hiding behind internet anonymity is cowardly.
I’d drop Eminem, JayZ and Tupac - none of these are particularly influential on later music - Run DMC even missed the original hip hop/rap boat, how’s about Grandmaster Flash? Afrika Bambataa? Melle Mel, Eric B and Rakim? Public Enemy?
MJ can also go, he’s a great artiste, but not as influential as James Brown who should be there.
I’d add in the Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop and Velvet Underground as being major influences on indie, punk and grunge musicians.
Metal was born with Black Sabbath, they should be there too!
And on top of all that Kraftwerk need a mention for influencing electronica acts from The Human League to modern day house/techno.
I like your list except for one name: Madonna. If there was ever a no talent non-entity in the world of rock, she is it. She is all bluster and no show except for the lackies around her who prop her up. A far better choice would be Tina Turner, Arethea Franklin, Shirley Alston Reeves (The shirelles).
So many on this list don’t deserve that credit. Eminem, Nirvana, JayZ, Tupac. They were huge, but that doesn’t mean they influenced anything.
And Kurt Cobain was a genuinely awful musician.
there is nobody better than him self 2 pac is the man
Elvis Presley changed the United States.
The Beatles changed the world, all the others before them are heroes, after them Bullshit artists.
the smiths don’t even deserve capitalisation.
Meatloaf is a fat idiot
Kurt Cobain was a crap singer and not much of a guitarist but hell, he could write tasty songs
Where are MetallicA AND Black Sabbath?! If Nirvana can get in there, why not MetallicA and Black Sabbath? Cmon even Cobain was influenced by MetallicA (who were obviously in turn influenced by Black Sabbath) for crying out loud!
looks like most of the people leaving comments are lookin for a greatest metal bands of all time, i agree with most of the list i think it should be 20 because they left out some people
Well I agree with the first part…however a better list would be….
1.) Beatles
2.) Elvis Presley
3.) B.B. King/Muddy Waters
4.) Chuck Berry
5.) Bob Dylan
6.) Jimi Hendrix
7.) Al Barr, Ken Casey, and Mike McGlogan go dkm
