8 International Football Legends
Posted on December 9th, 2008 in Sport |
Many have been called ‘great’; however, there are a few who can be called ‘legendary’. We have tried to compile such a list of football players. These men have astounded us; they captured our imagination and became the best at what they do. Most of them have of course gone beyond playing football: they elevated the sport.
Here is our list of 8 men who became legends:
Edison (Edson) Arantes do Nascimento aka Pelé
Pelé is one of the most well-known football stars and even those who do not know much about this sport, recognize his name. He once compared himself to Beethoven and the International Olympic Committee named him the Athlete of the Century in 1998. He became famous as 17 and led the Brazilians to victory in 1958, 1962 and 1970.
Diego Armando Maradona aka Maradona

Maradona and Pelé are the two greatest FIFA soccer players of the 20th century. Maradona was the South American Footballer of the Year in 1979 and 1980. He is a controversial figure in international football and has managed to capture the entire world’s attention. He played in 4 World Cups and is known for his Hand of God and Goal of the century.
Cristiano Ronaldo
He is still young but has captured international attention, especially when FIFPro named him their World Player of the Year 2008. He is the first United player to win the Golden Ball that the European Footballer of the Year receives since George Best in 1968.
Thierry Henry
Thierry Henry received the Légion d’Honneur, which is the highest decoration in France, for his role in the 1998 World Cup. He won the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year in 2003, 2004 and 2006, which is unrivalled. Arsenal fans call him their greatest player and Henry managed to popularise ‘Va va voom’ so much that it got included in the Concise Oxford English Dictionary.
Roberto Baggio
Baggio, or Il Divin Codino, scored 9 goals in 3 World Cup Finals and is one of the FIFA 100. Baggio was FIFA Player of the Year in 1993 but his fame could be mostly because he ‘lost’ Italy the 1994 World Cup. He made up for it with a penalty shot in 1998, though. A 2001 internet poll named him the Most Loved Player.
Paulo Roberto Falcão
Falcão, a FIFA 100 member, is one of the most talented midfielders ever. He played midfield for Brazil in the 1982 and 1986 World Cups. He won 3 Brazilian National Championships — 1975, 1976, and 1979 – and people called him ‘8th king of Rome’.
Beckham is one of ‘Britain’s Greatest Ambassadors’ and only the 21st player to score in 3 World Cups. He received entry into The English Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and is one of the most recognisable football stars. He and his wife have become somewhat of an industry.
Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite aka Kaká
This young football star is better known as Kaká and was FIFA World Player of the Year and European footballer of the year in 2007. He is the midfielder of AC Milan and also plays for the Brazilian national team.

Where’s Ronaldo and Zidane? They’re both better than Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Cristiano shouldn’t be there, isn’t this called the “8 International Football LEGENDS”? He is definitely not a legend.
Dude, seriously, half of them are from the last 5 years. Do some more research.
c. ronaldo? i don’t think he s a legend (yet). Instead you forgot players like Franz Beckenbauer, Michel Platini oder Zinedine Zidane. They are real legends.
not cristiano still too young not really done anything yet the man that can see it is ferguson . just like he saw keane, beckham, gigggs, the nevil bros. he gives them the chance to make a name ,but not everybody is up to it ,so we just have to wait . this can only be judged when he has finnished his career
name missing, johan cruyff
other: ferenc puzkas but the spelled right
No Cruyff, no Beckenbauer, no Zidane or Platini or Baresi or Puskas etc etc. How you can classify four active players as “legends” is beyond me.
Poor list.
This list is a joke, a couple of well know historic footballers mentioned (Pele and Maradona [who single handedly won the Serie A]) and the rest are just popular modern footballers.
Is there no room for Zidane in this list? Are you telling me Ronaldo and Kaka have greater pedigree? They are both kids and nowhere near legendary, maybe in the making but certainly not now.
What a joke.
Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Platini, Zidane, Puskas, Ronaldo….
All more “legendary” than C.Ronaldo and Kaka
Lev Yashin? Bobby Moore? Eusebio? Michel Platini?Dino Zoff?
Eusebio?
Yashin?
Matthews?
Tony Adams?
(ok, I’m gunners fan)
What about Alfredo di Stefano???
i dont agree with this list, besides Pele and Maradona(who is the best player ever) what about Platini, Ruud gulit, ZZ, Maldini, Beckenbauer, Romario, Van Basten……..
This list sucks men, you have no sense of history, the list in my opinion should be:
Pele
Maradona
Cryuff
Platini
Mathaus
Beckenbauer
DiStefano
Zidane
And im leaving out players such as Pasarella, Batistuta, Van Basten, Best, etc….
where is Zidane ???
this list is shocking and a joke
kaka , is way too young and beckam was just a player who commercialised soccer but not brilliant, where is platini, best, batistuta, zico, george weah, ronaldo, rivaldo, carlos and the ever great and remarkable zidane
This compilation was done by someone who doesn’t understand soccer at all. how in the world would you come up with a list that includes ‘Beckam, Cristiano Ronaldo…’, and exclude GREATS like ‘Zidane, and the real Ronaldo….’,
you are a joke……..
this list is a disgrase to football. How can kids who still have to grow be called legends. Where are the zidane’s the maldini’s, beckenbauer, the ronaldos, even rivaldo was better
who ever compiled this must have been in a hurry for then and now…..but need to go back and redo the whole thing……..i dont see Zidane and Ronaldo…..what is going on…….
this list is not the proper one its so so obvious these people dont knw proper football!!!!!!
what about Liverpool?
For as long as Ronaldo [the legendary brazillian], and Zidane are not there, your list is illegit. Ronaldo has not only been the only player to score 15 goals in the World Cup, he also set a record that is unlikely to be broken by anyone in the Spanish League when he scored 35 goals in oner season, when he was still playing for Barcelona.
There is not much to say about Zidane because he revolitonized the game, single handedly. He single handedly ushered France the 2006 World Cup. Infact, it was not France that lost to Italy in that final, it was Zidane.
Christiano Ronaldo is a great player, but he has not brought anything new. He has not broken any records. It is no wonder even in Portugal, Figo still eclipses him. The same goes for David B. He is great in his own right. Yes his Free kick were superb, and i guess thats why u included him, but so could Roberto Carlos; Junhinho, Riquelme, Eto, Ronaldinho….
Remove those guys and put ZIDANE and RONALDO.
Never mind my gramma. I was also in a hurry, like the person who compiled this list.
This list is a joke
Think - I’m a football coach if you want my top 8 legends mail me
what about Ronaldo the brazilian.zenadine zidane roberto carlos luis figo come guys chritiano is still a young chap he is good hey iam not disputing that
guys!!!!!
c.ronaldo is a great player he was the leading goal scorer i dont think that he is a legend yet and TT the real ronadlo dude he is a real joke he is just lucky that people like him.i think people like ANDREA PIRLO and FABIO CANNAVIRO
Hey man, definitely not Ronaldo. He cannot be classified as a legend, not on the same page as Pele and Maradona. He still has a lot to prove in the years ahead for club and country.
wheres RIVALDO…………..he is definatly the greatest after MARADONA……….and thats enough
I added this to digg
